George Washington ran unopposed. The vote was to decide who would be chosen as vice president. Each elector cast two votes, the winner became president, and the runner-up became vice president. All 69 electors cast one vote for Washington. Their other votes were divided among eleven other candidates. In 1804, the Twelfth Amendment changed this procedure.

*Two electors from Maryland and one elector from Vermont did not cast votes.
